El Faro / The Lighthouse

Built back in 1882, o guide ships through the Mona Passage, the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo) is identical in design to the lighthouses at Fajardo and Arecibo. What sets this lighthouse apart is its stunning location.

We visited the lighthouse recently and all though it was closed, we enjoyed the hike up to the lighthouse and the awesome views.

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse - Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo

There are several trails from the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse that offer panoramic views of the limestone cliffs, Caribbean Sea and views to La Playuela Beach. Just be careful when walking near the cliffs edge; it’s a long way down to crashing waves.

You can even walk all the way down to La Playuela Beach if you are feeling energetic.

Make sure to have your camera or phone fully charged as you are sure to be taking plenty of photos.

Getting to Cabo Rojo Lighthouse

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse is located at the end of PR 301 just past the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats. The final stretch of run is not tarmaced and can be a bit challenging with numerous potholes. Just take it slowly and you will be fine. At the end of the road there is a small parking area. From here you will need to hike up a gravel path which is about ¼ mile in length. It is uphill but not too challenging.

La Playuela Beach From Cabo Rojo Lighthouse

Note: Several sites state that the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse is open Wednesday to Sunday, but when we were there the Lighthouse was closed and I have not been able to confirm if in fact it is still open to the public.

Even closed this is a breathtaking place to visit, especially if you combine it with a visit to the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats and nearby Cabo Rojo beaches.
