Casa Blanca Museum a Window to the Past

Casa Blanca Museum Old San JuanStepping into Casa Blanca is like stepping back in time. Built in 1521, Casa Blanca was the original first fortification in Old San Juan, overlooking San Juan Bay. It was built as the residence for Juan Ponce de Leon and his family, although Juan Ponce de Leon died before ever having the chance to live here.

Casa Blanca Museum Old San JuanHis descendants lived in Casa Blanca until the mid 18th Century. The first building was a wooden structure that was replaced by the current stone structure after it was destroyed by fire.

Casa Blanca has also been the home of both The Spanish and American army at various times through its history. In 1967 the Puerto Rico Government took control of Casa Blanca and it became a historical monument.

Casa Blanca Museum Old San JuanToday the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture has turned Casa Blanca into a museum depicting life as it was back in the 16th and 17th Century’s.

The museum consists of various rooms all depicting carious aspects of life; bedrooms, living rooms and, a very cool kitchen. Guided tours are available throughout the day, or you can just pick up an informational pamphlet. take your time walking through the house and make sure to check out the great views of San Juan Bay.

Casa Blanca Museum Old San JuanOutside, take time to explore the lush gardens and various water features. The gardens were quite overgrown when I visited, but they are well worth checking out and do not miss the Garita.

Casa Blanca is not a large museum, but you should take your time to really appreciate the buildings, history and gardens.

If you crave more history after your visit, check out the nearby Museo de las Americas located in the Ballaja Barracks, or grab a coffee at Cafe Don Ruiz (also in the Ballaja Barrack).

There are so many historical options to see in Old San Juan, Casa Blanca is one of them.

  1. Do you have a flagpole at Casa Blanca? I have an Air Force civilian employee from Puerto Rico who would like the US Flag flown at Casa Blanca and given to her for her retirement. I am willing to provide the flag and the mailing fee.

    Thank you,
    Marco
