In 1797 Sir Ralph Abercrombie led more than seven thousand British forces in an attempt to gain control of one the Spanish Empires key outposts in the New World; Puerto Rico. What the British failed to realize was the strength and conviction of a smaller band of men made up of Spanish soldiers, members of the Puerto Rican Fixed Regiment, local militia and citizens. This small band of men stood their ground with the help of the impregnable fortifications of El Morro Fort and San Cristobal Fort and defeated the much larger British forces. This battle became known as the 1797 Battle of San Juan
On April 23-25, 2010 over 100 living history volunteers wearing period costumes and performing military drills, and firing demonstrations, will transport you back in time as they re-enact the 1797 Battle for San Juan.
Events will take place at various spots around Old San Juan including, San Cristobel Fort and El Morro Fort.
Schedule of Events:
Friday, April 23 – drills, musket and cannon firing on the esplanade, in front of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, 10:30 am -12 Noon
Friday, April 23 – soldiers of military units assemble at the encampment and march to Castillo San Cristobal, 3:30 pm-4:30 pm
Saturday, April 24 – drills, weapons firing demonstration, Castillo San Felipe del Morro, 09:30 am-12:00 Noon and 3:00-5:00 pm
Sunday, April 25 – drills, weapons firing demonstration, outer defenses, Castillo San Cristobal, 9:30-10:30 am
