Celebrate Three Kings Day In Puerto Rico

Three KIngs Day Puerto Rico

Three Kings Day (DĂa De Los Tres Reyes Magos) on January 6th is a huge celebration here in Puerto Rico; even more so than Christmas Day for a lot of families.

The day celebrates The Three Kings, Melchor, Baltazar and Gaspar who followed the Star of Bethlehem to visit the Baby Jesus to offer gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Like other Spanish cultures here in Puerto Rico children write lists (similar to Santa’s list) for gifts they would like to receive from The Three Kings. On the night of January 5th children decorate boxes and fill them with grass for the camels to eat and leave them at the foot of their beds.

During the night The Three Kings visit each house 😉 and leave presents for the children and parents if they are lucky.

During Three Kings Day families gather for a huge celebration with traditional Puerto Rican Christmas foods, music and more.

Along with family gatherings each town will host their own Three Kings celebration either on the 6th of January or on the days leading up to the 6th. These events may include. Parades, Live Entertainment, Family Actives, Visits from The Three Kings and toys for the children.

  1. Telmo,

Hope your daughter had a magical Three KIngs Day. It was mine and our new baby’s first Three Kings and although I am sick (flu) it was a great day.

  2. That looks so cool. I’ve been to Puerto Rico only ones to get a connecting flight, but I’ve not had the opportunity to look round. I’m definitely looking forward to visiting one day. I’ve heard that it’s a magical place.

  3. We are not Espanish, however, I love to celebrate and I love having children be aware of other cultures and their celbrations. Our children grew up with the custom on Three Kings Day having a party and one person finding a bean in the cake. That person was to get three wishes—within reason–to be granted by someone (usually parent) who was at the party. We also had everyone sing, “We Three Kings of Orient Are..” while the chilren wearing paper crowns, paraded to the manager where they would kneel. They would each also receive at least one gift for themselves. So—this 2011–we will do similar–for our grandchildren-but postponing it until January 8, a Sat.`
