Mosquito Bay Named in Coastal Living Top 10 Coastal Wildlife Hot Spots

Coastal Living’s Top 10 Coastal Wildlife Hot SpotsMosquito Bay, Vieques, Puerto Rico has been named in Coastal Living’s list of Top 10 Coastal Wildlife Hot Spots. Not surprising as it is one of the best places to experience a bioluminescence bay. Mosquito Bay is one of the largest bio bays in the world, and the glow is caused by micro-organisms (dinoflagellates) which glow whenever the water is disturbed, leaving a trail of neon blue. The best time to see the bio bay is during a New to Waxing or Waning moon, when the night sky is dark due to little or no moonlight.

Remember to wear insect repellent, but make sure that it does NOT contain DEET as this is harmful to the organisms of the bio bay.
