Fried to Perfection in Puerto Rico

El Farol Kiosk in Puerto Rico by Dallas Morning Star

I came across this article the other day and it made my mouth water just reading it. Mary Ellen Botter of the Dallas Morning News, writes about the famous Puerto Rican ‘Fried Kiosk Food’ and how they may not be good for your diet; but will certainly put a smile on your face.
The article talks about the types of food available at the various kiosks around the island; cuchifritos (fried finger food), alcapurria (cigar-shape plaintain-and-meat fritter), fish pancakes, meat pies, corn sticks, kebabs and baseball-size orbs of potato or plantain with a meat center and crisp-crust jacket.

One thing is for sure, the kiosks around the island at places like Luquillo beach are packed on weekends with tourists and locals alike.

‘The fare doesn’t pretend to be fancy. Offerings include fish pancakes, meat pies, corn sticks, kebabs and baseball-size orbs of potato or plantain with a meat center and crisp-crust jacket. Put a few together with a soda or an island-brewed Medalla beer, and you have more than a snack. You have a filling, inexpensive meal.’ Ellen Botter

If you are looking for traditional Puerto Rican food at very reasonable prices, the kiosks around the island at the various beaches are definitely worth checking out.

‘Two fish tacos, an alcapurria (cigar-shape plaintain-and-meat fritter), a beer and a soda are a crackling hot, surprisingly nongreasy deal for two at $7.’ Ellen Botter

With prices like that, you can’t go wrong.
