Their newly released April predictions are calling for 8 hurricanes of which 4 will be categorized as major hurricanes of Cat 3 and above.

With the 2010 Hurricane Season running from June 1 until November 30, the Colorado team predicts that there is a 69 percent chance of 1 major hurricane making landfall in the US and for those in the Gulf Coast they predict a 44 percent chance of landfall.

For Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, the hurricane forecasting team predicts a 58 percent chance of a major hurricane tracking into the Caribbean.

The past few years since I have been here we have had several hurricane and tropical storms pass by the north and south of the island dumping lots of rain, with the last landfall by a hurricane being 1998 when Hurricane Georges hit Puerto Rico.

Hopefully the 2010 hurricane season will pass by without any major disasters here in Puerto Rico, as well as the rest of the Caribbean and US mainland.

You can check out the full report by the Colorado State University hurricane forecasting team here and you can keep a check on storms on our Puerto Rico weather page.

With June 1st just around the corner, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has just released its updated forecast for the upcoming hurricane season. According to NOAA the 2008 hurricane season is likely to be above normal. They are predicting up to 16 named storms, with 5 of these having the potential to be major hurricanes.

The NOAA predictions are in line with those from William Gray and the Colorado State University hurricane forecasting team.
For 2008 the storm names are:

Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gustav, Hanna, Ike, Josephine, Kyle, Laura, Marco, Nana, Omar, Paloma, Rene, Sally, Teddy, Vicky, Wilfred

In the event that your trip to Puerto Rico gets disrupted due to a hurricane, you should make sure that you are fully aware of the policy for both the airline and the hotel where you will be staying. You might also want to consider travel insurance, but make sure you read the fine print to ensure that it offers you the coverage that you require.

What will the weather be like in August? is a common question that I see on the various forums out there, so I thought I would take this opportunity to detail the average weather here in Puerto Rico for the rest of the year.

The following information was taken from the NOAA website for San Juan Airport. These are typical temperatures and rainfall (but are not a guarantee of what will actual occur this year). Remember, the typical forecast for the summer in Puerto Rico is hot with the chance of a shower. You will see this forecast most days and yes, sometimes it will rain, but it will be over fairly quickly and will dry out almost immediately. So do not despair if you are checking the 7 day forecast and you see showers; chances are that it will not be that drastic, and you will have a great time here in Puerto Rico.

July: Max 87.4, Min 76.4, rain 8.92 inches
August: Max 87.8, Min 77, rain 5.22 inches
September: Max 87.8, Min 76.5, rain 5.60 inches
October: Max 87.5, Min 75.6, rain 5.06 inches
November: Max 85.1, Min 74.0, rain 6.17 inches
December: Max 83.2, Min 72.1, rain 4.57 inches

The above are typical values, but as I said it may be different this year. For example last year (2006) the actual temperature and rainfall were:

July 2006: Max 88.0, Min 77.3, rain 4.26 inches
August 2006: Max 87.8, Min 77.3, rain 4.26 inches
September 2006: Max 89.9, Min 77.6, rain 1.78 inches
October 2006: Max 89.3, Min 77.0, rain 11.25 inches
November 2006: Max 87.2, Min 75.1, rain 5.71 inches
December 2006: Max 84.2, Min 73.2, rain 4.50 inches

So as you can see; September had much less rain, whereas October’s rainfall was twice the norm.

Have a great time when you are here…
